Trump’s Colonialist Stride into Jerusalem

Press Release from Friends of Al Aqsa

Donald Trump has been responsible for a number of inflammatory actions and remarks over the course of his presidency, but none so ill-advised as his latest move in the Middle East. Announcing plans to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem, Trump treads the path of Balfour.

By calling for a move of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem he is legitimatising the illegality of Israeli occupation

Of course this is not entirely surprising of a President who has demonstrated a lack of judgement on so many crucial domestic and global issues. However, the danger here is that he is derailing an already precarious situation beyond repair. Palestinians have suffered some of the worst forms of oppression in history, and continue to do so every day. They live in hope that they will one day be free of occupation and able to self-govern. Trump has undermined all chances of peace by attempting to change the status of Jerusalem which is a fundamental issue to Palestinians.

Under international law, East Jerusalem is considered to be illegally occupied by Israel. It is in this part of Jerusalem that the Holy Al-Aqsa Sanctuary, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Wailing Wall are all located. East Jerusalem has been under occupation since the 6 Day War in 1967 and Israel’s deliberate policy of undermining Palestinian sovereignty in the city is well documented by the UN and dozens of human rights groups over the past 50 years.

Trump has poured fuel in the occupation machine of Israel for a greater hardship to the Palestinians. The actions of this colonialist President will further prolong the injustices of the Palestinians and the dangers to Al-Aqsa have been magnified.

FOA is calling for protests…..
